#1. St. Augustine’s is an urban parish with a diverse, primarily African American congregation. What experience have you had that would help you be a good leader in this community?
#2. People in emotional pain don’t often know how to reach out and communicate to the church when they are in need. What experiences have you had in recognizing these types of situations? Give an example of how you addressed it, what happened and the results.

New Rector Search: An Opportunity for Growth
St. Augustine’s has a long and rich history of Afro-Anglican worship and social ministry in urban North Oakland. We strive to follow the models of faith, worship, and ministry that previous generations have left us while adapting to the economic, demographic, and social realities of contemporary Oakland. The social and racial struggles that consume the nation are alive and well in our community and have echoes in our parish. We are keen to find a leader who will guide the congregation as we enter our second century of ministry, helping us live and grow through these struggles to further Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of the Beloved Community within St. Augustine’s and in our city.

To grow God’s church and serve God’s people in our worship, which reflects the richness of the African American culture, and through educational and outreach programs to the community. We welcome all who wish to join us in witness to God’s love, empowerment, and mercy.
Who We Are
We are a welcoming, diverse, and inclusive multi-racial congregation with a proud Afro-Anglican heritage and history. We share a commitment to Christ, expressed through Anglican liturgy infused with gospel, jazz, and traditional church music; to warm hospitality; to social justice ministry; to upholding parish traditions; and to preserving the parish’s historical significance in the Diocese of California. Many members travel considerable distances to participate in worship and parish ministries.
St. Augustine's faces challenges that are common among urban, mainline churches, including the need to maintain and enhance financial stability in the context of an aging parish population. Our elders embrace younger and newer members from all backgrounds in our efforts to serve the church and community, and we hope to attract more energetic young adults to join our ministries. We seek a rector for St. Augustine's who has the leadership skills and imagination to help us address these challenges effectively.
Top Priorities for Our Rector
We seek a rector who embraces our values and commitments for St. Augustine’s, specifically:
Pastoral care: We highly value pastoral care from our priest, and we have lay ministers who are also passionate about providing pastoral care. We expect the rector to extend spiritual support to parishioners who are sick or shut in or who face personal or family crises.
Growth: We are eager to attract more and young/younger members to add energy and vitality to our ministries. New ideas, such as the successful first Sunday of the month Jazz Service, are welcome. We invite all to join our community.
Healthy relationships, problem solving, and reconciliation: Every organization encounters issues and problems with programming, finances, staffing, physical plant or change. Given the diversity of our congregation and parishioners’ dedication to the health and longevity of the parish and its traditions, differences of opinion arise about how to address such issues. We would like to develop healthy processes to move through these issues with more ease and grace.
Financial health/stewardship: We are deeply committed to the financial health and stability of the parish now and for the future. We are working to establish new sources of revenue in addition to adding pledge income by increasing membership. Our strong commitment to stewardship extends to preserving and enhancing our historic buildings to further the success of our ministries.
Outreach: We seek to strengthen our ties to the community, especially Oakland clergy and government, to contribute to the health and well-being of our neighborhood. We have expanded the scope of our One Good Meal feeding program from offering a bag of groceries to providing meals, clothing, and toiletries and building connections with the community and among parishioners. Going forward, we want to build on this strong foundation to have greater impact on our neighborhood and beyond. We look to our rector to provider leadership in the growth and development of connections with Oakland civic leaders and clergy.
